MEANING OF KAZ DAĞI / IDA

Ida is the name of Kazdağı coming from thousand years. Name Ida is converted to Kazdağı in time with the settlement of Turks in Anatolia. There is not a precise agreement on the vocable meaning of the name Ida. Some say it comes from a vanished old Anatolian language. some think it carries the same meaning with the word "Ide" in Greek which stands for thought. Others believe that it means tree or forest. Also some think "Ida-Idaia" is an adjective for Kybele. The last thesis is supported by Edremit's old name being Idaion. Name Ida is mentioned many times in the Iliada of Homeros and always used to mean "the mother of animals" or "plenty springed Ida"

By the artwork that reached us from the antique era, we can understand that Ida was holy mountain during the polytheistic age. According to the belief of those ages Zeus is born from the union of mother god Kybele and the lord of the universe Kronos at an Ida mountain in Crete. A kings daughter with the name Ida nurses Zeus as his god mother. Then we see Zeus at Ida/Kazdağı. Marries sister Hera here and directs the famous Troy war here from the peak of the Ida mountain.

As it is known, initially Christianity has found more followers in Anatolia. With the murder of Jesus, Virgin Mary and her believers settled in Ephesus that is located in todays Selçuk county and tried to spread their monotheism. In time this religion became the official religion of Roman Empire who occupied all of Anatolia. During this period of almost a thousand years Mount Ida kept its holy status and served as a bridge in spreading of Christianity through Europe. Famous Saint Paul travelled through Mount Ida to the Odunluk Pier and to Bozcaada Island before reaching Europe. Edremit and Altınoluk located in Northern Aegean became the center of Christianity and Monunt Ida harboured many priest schools on the skirts. Names of that era is still used today and many locations are still recognized as church areas and monasteries.

Although the area is under the control of muslim Turks the holy status of Mount Ida is not changed. On the contrary Turks wanted to protect the holy status by changing the name from Ida to Kazdağı During the immigration from central Asia to Anatolia Turks accepted the relion of Islam however carried some elements of the Shaman religion. In the beliefs of some Turk clans goose (Kaz) is the holy animal that carried the God of Skies on its back. Ida carried Zeus the god of gods on its peaks So in time the goose figure that carried the god of skies and Ida that carried the god of gods get identified together and the name Ida became Kazdağı. Goose figure is no stranger to the region. Roman poet Vergilius (70-19 BC) in his saga Aeneas mentions the goose spread around the river Menderes(Skamandros) plains. Some doors that came out from Assos antique settlement has engravings of wild goose figures. So goose is an animal that is plenty in the region since the old ages.

In the time period that covers hundreds of years the beliefs of Turks replaces the local beliefs. At the end of this harmonic conversion while Ida is being changed to Kazdağı, Gargaros the highest peak of Ida where Zeus sat in the saga of İliada is converted to Karataş which is holy sky rock. The eagle emblem of Zeus keeps the fame under Kartalçeşme and Kartalçimen. Holy alleys name became Kaz Avlusu. Kaz (goose) is the new owner of the mountain. Every year on the week of 15 Auğust local people erect tents in the Kartalçimen plains which is within the Kazavlusu to carry the holiness of the mountain to our day.
